§ Mr. Ron DaviesTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what advice he gives the veterinary service concerning the use of caesarian sections on cows suspected of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
§ Mr. MacleanCaesarian sections are not advised for preparturient cows. However, if a cow is unable to calve normally a caesarian section may be carried out at the discretion of the veterinary surgeon. Such animals must be isolated in approved accommodation whilst calving and for 72 hours afterwards. The placenta, uterine discharges and bedding must be burned or buried.
