To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many E. coli per 100 ml. of water were found in the 1988 bathing water survey at Saundersfoot.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what was the highest level of E. coli per 100 ml found in the 1988 bathing water survey at(a) Cold Knapp, Barry, and (b) Oxwich bay;

(2) what was the highest level of total coliforms per 100 ml found in the 1988 bathing water survey at (a) Oxwich bay, (b) Saundersfoot and (c) Whitesands.

The information requested is contained within the 1988 bathing water survey report, a copy of which, as the hon. Member will know, has already been placed in the Library of the House.

The samples which failed account for only a small proportion of those taken throughout the 1988 season. The medians were much lower. The Welsh water authority has in hand a programme of remedial works to ensure full compliance with the EC bathing water directive of all listed bathing waters in the Principality.
