To ask the Minister for the Arts to what extent he is providing for the building and maintenance of museums and galleries.

Mr. Luce

I am continuing to give high priority to building and maintenance in our national museums and galleries. Spending on building and maintenance will increase to £55 million by 1991–92, which represents an increase of 53 per cent. since 1987–88.

To ask the Minister for the Arts when he last met the chairman of the Museums and Galleries Commission to discuss the future funding and administration of national museums.

Mr. Luce

I meet the chairman of the Museums and Galleries Commission quite frequently and on a wide range of subjects which have included matters raised in the commission's May 1988 report on the national museums.
