HC Deb 24 April 1989 vol 151 cc417-8W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on what research into drugs to relieve AIDS is taking place in Britain.

Mr. Jackson

The Medical Research Council is supporting a directed programme of research, worth £31 million cash over five years, to develop vaccines against HIV infection and drugs to relieve AIDS. Over half the research projects in this programme are related to drug development. Copies of a booklet outlining the programme are available in the Library. I understand that many of the pharmaceutical companies are also engaged in such work.
