To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the cost of the family practitioner service in 1978–79 and in 1987–88; and what was the total cost of drugs prescribed by general practitioners at those two dates.

The gross costs of the family practitioner services in England, including capital expenditure but excluding administration and related costs, were £1,434 million in 1978–79, and £4,210 million in 1987–88. The gross cost of drugs prescribed by general practitioners in 1978–79 and 1987–88 were £558 million and £1,547 million respectively.
