HL Deb 07 April 1989 vol 505 c1481WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What tonnage of uranium was imported into the United Kingdom during each year since 1979 for processing by British Nuclear Fuels Ltd. and subsequent export, and what was the origin and destination of each consignment so treated?

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (Baroness Hooper)

BNFL has processed uranium ore concentrate (UOC) containing over 30,000 tonnes of uranium on behalf of its overseas customers from 1979 to date. Annual figures could only be provided at disproportionate cost. The origin of such uranium is a matter for its customers who remain the owners of the materials. All such materials imported into the United Kingdom for processing are subject to Euratom safeguards and to the terms of UK/Euratom/IAEA safeguards agreements. The principal destinations to which the processed material was exported were France, Holland, Italy, Japan, USA, USSR and West Germany.
