§ Mr. David Nicholson
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further measures he is taking to assist the United Nations Organisation's and other efforts to achieve peace and relief in the Sudan, following the recent United Nations conference in Khartoum; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Waldegrave
On 3 April my hon. Friend the Minister of State for Overseas Development announced a further contribution of £5 million towards relief operations in Southern Sudan. Of this, £2 million will be channelled through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), £2 million through United Nations Agencies (UNICEF and the World Food Programme) and £1 million through British non-government organisations. This is in addition to the £14.4 million in emergency aid provided to Sudan in 1988. We continue to urge all parties in Sudan to work for the speedy implementation of the plan of action agreed at last month's United Nations conference in Khartoum.
