To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what claims for damages caused to boats by submarines are currently being considered; what total sum is involved; and what sums have been paid for damages in each year since 1979 and for the current year to date.

The Ministry of Defence deals on a legal liability basis with claims for compensation arising from incidents involving Royal Navy submarines. In each of the last 10 years, the following sums have been paid out as compensation:

Four claims are currently being considered, the details of which are regarded as private between the claimants and the Department.
