HC Deb 04 April 1989 vol 150 cc15-6W
Dr. Hampson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in view of changes of fishing and commercial policy by the Falkland Islands Government, if he will make a statement on the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards British fishing companies in the Falklands and the role to be played by British interests in maintaining the economic development of the islands.

Mr. Eggar

We welcome the opportunities which the Falklands fishery offers British fishing companies and encourage them to make the effort and commitment to participate in its successful exploitations. So do the Falkland Islands Government. British commercial interests are playing a key role in infrastructural development, including a new telecommunications system, secondary school, housing and other building works. We shall continue to encourage British participation in the expanding economy of the Falkland Islands.
