HL Deb 04 April 1989 vol 505 c1088WA
Lord Rippon of Hexham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they are taking to prevent the construction of a car park in Covent Garden.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Lord Hesketh)

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment gave very careful consideration to calling in the planning application by the Royal Opera House but concluded that he would not be justified in taking the decision out of the hands of the local planning authority.
