§ Mr. BrazierTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the work the European Movement is doing in increasing public awareness of the economic benefits of 1992; and if he will issue a statement on financial support.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe European Movement has a valuable role to play in drawing public attention and that of business men and industry to the advantages of completion of the single market.
Given the constraints on public resources, and our policy of encouraging non-governmental organisations wherever possible to seek private funding, we told the European Movement in 1985 that official funding would be phased out over the following three years. This decision was confirmed to the chairman in person in May 1986, and the final payment was made as planned this August. I am pleased that the European Movement has succeeded in raising significant private sector funding.
