To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what research is being carried out by his Department into the future development of the European monetary system.

§ Mr. Lilley
The development and prospects of the European monetary system is monitored continuously.

§ 49. Mr. Hardy
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a further statement on his policy towards the European monetary system.

§ Mr. Lilley
The Government's position on the United Kingdom's participation in the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system remains that the United Kingdom will join when the time is right.
