HC Deb 20 October 1988 vol 138 c1010W
81. Miss Widdecombe

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what help he plans for farmers still facing substantial costs for clearance as a result of the storm on 16 October 1987.

Mr. Ryder

The Government believe that the package of measures which they introduced after last year's great storm provided a comprehensive and appropriate response. Applications have already been received for the replanting of 5 million trees under the special Forestry Commission replanting scheme and it is expected that a half of the fallen timber will have been cleared by the end of next spring. In addition, expenditure of some £2.5 million is expected under MAFF's storm damage recovery scheme for environmental features such as shelterbelts and orchard replacement.
