§ 81. Miss WiddecombeTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what help he plans for farmers still facing substantial costs for clearance as a result of the storm on 16 October 1987.
§ Mr. RyderThe Government believe that the package of measures which they introduced after last year's great storm provided a comprehensive and appropriate response. Applications have already been received for the replanting of 5 million trees under the special Forestry Commission replanting scheme and it is expected that a half of the fallen timber will have been cleared by the end of next spring. In addition, expenditure of some £2.5 million is expected under MAFF's storm damage recovery scheme for environmental features such as shelterbelts and orchard replacement.
