HC Deb 19 October 1988 vol 138 cc939-40W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the effect of the introduction of community charge on the income of full-time students in Scotland, in terms of average losses or gains per month.

Mr. Lang

My right hon. and learned Friend has made no such estimate.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

One application covering 373 hectares in the Loch Lomond ESA has been received from a voluntary conservation body. An agreement was concluded covering these 373 hectares.

Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when he expects to lay a report before the House in accordance with the requirements of section 18(8) of the Agriculture Act 1986 on the performance of management agreements in environmentally sensitive areas in Scotland; and whether any such report will describe the steps taken to monitor the effect of the agreements on wildlife and the landscape in each area.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

It is too early to assess the effect of the performance of management agreements on each environmentally sensitive area as a whole. My right hon. and learned Friend is, however, considering whether a preliminary statement describing conditions in each area might be helpful. The report on the effect of agreements which will be provided in due course will describe the monitoring arrangements adopted.

Mr. Macdonald

To ask the Secretary of State: for Scotland if he will give in respect of environmentally sensitive areas in Scotland(a) the total extent in hectares, of each area, (b) the extent of agricultural land within each area, (c) the number of farmers eligible to enter into management agreements in each area, (d) the number of agreements concluded with farmers in each area and (e) the total area of land covered by agreements in each area.

Mr. Michael Forsyth
