Bank base rates are 13 per cent.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the future movement in interest rates over the next year.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 29 November 1988]: Interest rates will remain as high as they need be, for as long as it takes, to bring inflationary pressures back under control.
