HL Deb 23 November 1988 vol 502 cc99-100WA
The Earl of Kimberley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in view of the evidence put before a recent meeting of the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House on the subject of Eritrea, they will condemn the treatment of the people of Eritrea and Tigray by the Ethiopian Government.

Lord Trefgarne

We strongly disapprove of the Ethiopian Government's conduct of the war in Eritrea and Tigray, and my right honourable and learned friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs expressed our concern about human rights and civilian casualties to Foreign Minister Berhanu Bayih when they met in September. We shall of course continue to express our concern to the Ethiopian Government at every opportunity.
