HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c494W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has on the condition of the Trent and its tributaries in(a) Nottingham and (b) Nottinghamshire.

Mr. Moynihan

The quality of the Trent has been improved significantly in recent years. It now fully meets its quality objective of class 2 (fair) quality as it flows through Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and supports good coarse fisheries.

I understand from the Severn Trent water authority that most of the main Nottinghamshire tributaries of the Trent also now meet its quality objectives. The main exceptions are the rivers Erewash, Maun and Idle which are still below standard. Planned improvements to the authority's sewage treatment works should result in these rivers generally achieving their quality objectives by the mid-1990s.
