HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 c396W
Mr. Grocott

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average cost per day, including the costs involved in admission and discharge procedures of periods of imprisonment lasting(a) five days, (b) seven days, (c) 14 days, (d) 30 days, (e) 45 days, (f) three months, (g) six months, (h) 12 months, (i) 18 months, (j) two years and (k) more than two years, respectively.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The average cost of imprisonment per inmate per day for 1987–88 was £39.29. Although the significance of fixed costs, including the costs of the admission and discharge procedures, declines as the length of a term of imprisonment increases, information is not held in a form which enables average cost per day for sentences of different lengths to be calculated.
