§ Mr. Douglas HoggThe average cost of imprisonment per inmate per day for 1987–88 was £39.29. Although the significance of fixed costs, including the costs of the admission and discharge procedures, declines as the length of a term of imprisonment increases, information is not held in a form which enables average cost per day for sentences of different lengths to be calculated.
