To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what help his Department will be giving Jamaica in the task of reconstruction following Hurricane Gilbert.

Immediately after the hurricane we gave emergency supplies and assistance worth £550,000. As soon as the extent of the damage was assessed, we offered a grant of £3 million for reconstruction work.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further reconstruction aid he is providing for Jamaica following Hurricane Gilbert.

In addition to emergency aid, we have offered £3 million for reconstruction aid in Jamaica. About £2 million of this is being used for repairing the electricity distribution system. We shall respond positively to Jamaican requests for use of the remaining £1 million.
