Mr. McLeish

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many approved YTS places are available in Scotland at the latest date for which the information is available;

(2) how many 16 and 17-year-olds were on YTS on the latest date for which the information was available.

Mr. Lang

At 30 September 1988 there were 62,329 agreed YTS places in Scotland, of which 50,273 were filled and 12,056 unfilled.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the total number of approved YTS places for each of the area manpower boards in Scotland at the latest date for which figures are available.

The number of agreed YTS places at 30 September 1988 at Training Agency area office level (which replaced the former area manpower boards) is shown in the following table:

While all 16 and 17-year-olds in Scotland are eligible for YTS, a comprehensive analysis is not available on an area basis.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what is the total number of approved YTS places currently available which have never been filled;

(2) what is the total number of authorised YTS places available which have been unoccupied for more than six months.
