§ Mr. BerminghamTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners whose country of origin was either(a) the Republic of Ireland or (b) Northern Ireland are currently being held under sentence in gaols in England and Wales.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggCitizens of Northern Ireland are not separately identified from other citizens of the United Kingdom. However, on 30 September 1988 about 300 sentenced prisoners in prison service establishments in England and Wales who were citizens of the United Kingdom or whose citizenship was unknown were known to have been born in Northern Ireland.
The recording of nationality on the records held centrally for citizens of the Republic of Ireland is not completely reliable because it depends upon the 15W information provided by the prisoner. On 30 September abut 430 sentenced prisoners in establishments in England and Wales were recorded as citizens of or born in the Republic of Ireland.
