Mr. Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is taking to implement the recommendations of the independent pay study published in 1987 as part of the 1986 pay settlement for technicians in universities.

Mr. Jackson

The Government are not involved in the pay negotiations of university technicians. It is for universities to negotiate a settlement from within their resources in the light of their overall priorities and having regard to the need to recruit and retain staff of appropriate quality. Comparability with other groups cannot be the main criterion.
