To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how widely the vacancy for the position of chairman of the National Rivers Authority advisory committee was advertised; and how many applicants were considered.

The position of chairman of the National Rivers Authority advisory committee was not advertised. But a number of candidates were considered before the decision was taken to appoint my right hon. and noble Friend Lord Crickhowell.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what expenses the chairman of the national rivers authority advisory committee will be eligible to claim.

Mr. Moynihan

As chairman of the National Rivers Authority advisory committee, my right hon. and noble Friend, Lord Crickhowell, will be eligible to claim current Civil Service class I travelling and subsistence allowances.
