To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the total number of beds in private medical clinics in England.

Mrs. Currie

On 31 December 1986, the latest date for which information is available centrally, there were 62,112 beds in private hospitals, homes and clinics registered under section 23 of the Registered Homes Act 1984. Details from Form SBH 212 are published annually and are available in the Library.

Serivce. Their annual accounts do not separately indentify such expenditure but, given the level of their total expenditure, that on agency staff is not thought to be significant.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the expenditure in each regional health authority on agency staff employed on administrative, secretarial and clerical work in each year since 1978–79.
