§ Mr. WigleyTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his policy with regard to dealing with individuals and bodies in Wales who wish to communicate with his Department through the medium of the Welsh language.
§ Mr. Peter Brooke[holding answer 20 May 1988]: When the need arises for interpretation or translation from another language the Treasury either uses a member of its own staff proficient in the language concerned or if necessary calls on the specialist resources in other departments, for example the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. However, we are not aware of any occasions so far where it has been necessary to communicate in Welsh.
