HC Deb 20 May 1988 vol 133 cc597-8W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether the Government have offered any financial assistance to Falkland Islanders who wish to emigrate from the islands; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Eggar

We have not offered any financial assistance to Falkland Islanders wishing to emigrate from the islands. The FICZ has increased job opportunities in the islands over the last 18 months. The 1986 census showed an increase in population for the first time since 1930.

Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the present permanent population of the Falkland Islands; what was the population in 1980; and what proportion of the present population are native to the islands.

Mr. Eggar

At the last census held on 16 November 1986, the population of the Falkland Islands was 1,916. In 1980 the population was 1,813. The 1986 census figures established that at that time 67 per cent. of the population was born in the Falkland Islands.
