HC Deb 19 May 1988 vol 133 c532W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will state the number of buildings that are used by his Department for storage of ammunition or explosives that have no automatic fire alarm; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

[holding answer 12 May 1988]: It is not our general practice to install automatic fire alarms in explosives storage buildings as these are built and maintained to standards which ensure the lowest possible risk. Automatic fire alarms are not required under explosives regulations or the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Such buildings are, however, usually served by manual fire alarms to warn employees of any incident.
