§ Mr. Gordon BrownTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many tax units in 1988–89 will be on 10 times average earnings or more.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 25 April 1988]: In 1988–89 it is estimated that 120,000 tax units will have total income of more than five times average earnings—£63,600 per year. It is assumed that average earnings are those for men in all occupations who work a full week and whose pay is unaffected by absence (estimated at £244.70 per week in 1988–89). I regret that a reliable estimate of the number of tax units with total income of more than 10 times average earnings is not available as estimates are based on a projection of the 1985–86 survey of personal incomes.
