HC Deb 16 May 1988 vol 133 c355W
15. Mr. Litherland

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his policy towards providing subsidies for fares on light rail public transport services.

Mr. David Mitchell

The Government's policy towards providing subsidies for light rail service is set out in their recent response to the third report of the Transport Select Committee on the financing of rail services. Broadly, the Government expect users to pay through fares the benefit they receive from rail services, but subsidies may be payable to reflect external benefits which cannot be captured through revenues.
