Mr. Home Robertson

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing changes in the provision of Government financial support, including tax incentives, to public and private sector housing respectively, in Scotland, Wales and each region of England.

Mr. Major

The table shows voted expenditure on housing for the years 1978–79 and 1988–89 for the public and private sectors. It includes both public and non-public expenditure.

A regional breakdown of the figures for England is not available. Regional figures for mortgage interest tax relief for the year 1978–79 can be provided and these are detailed in the following table, but, following the introduction of the MIRAS system in April 1983, regional information
