HL Deb 11 May 1988 vol 496 c1214WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What specific projects and plans they have for creating new employment in West Belfast and when these are expected to come to fruition.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Northern Ireland Office (Lord Lyell)

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State is most anxious to see an improvement in economic activity in West Belfast, and he is considering urgently what additional practical steps he might take to promote it. Success, however, will not be achieved by the efforts of government alone; the private and voluntary sectors must have a major role. The biggest single boost to the prospects of the area would come from the renunciation of violence, which is a major obstacle to achieving better prospects for all who live there.
