§ Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what arrangements he intends to make regarding the qualifications and suitability of persons to be employed as teachers in city technology colleges.
§ Mrs. RumboldTeachers at city technology colleges will be employed by the charitable trust established to run the colleges, and appointed by the governing bodies and the principals acting on behalf of the governing bodies. My right hon. Friend will require, as a condition of grant, that CTCs will normally employ as teachers those who have qualified teacher status.
CTCs will be registered independent schools within the meaning of the Education Act 1944. As such they will fall within the scope of my right hon. Friend's powers under section 71 of that Act with regard to the suitability of persons employed as teachers. Like other schools, CTCs will also have access to my Department's information on those teachers who have been excluded from the profession, or restricted in their activities.
