HC Deb 11 May 1988 vol 133 cc135-6W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence for what reason the Army has required Brigadier Geoffrey Slater to retire from his post as head of 23 Base Workshops at Wettar, in the Federal Republic of Germany; if he is to be charged with any offence; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

Following allegations against Brigadier Slater, which were made in an anonymous letter to Headquarters British Army of the Rhine, it was decided that it was in the best interests of Brigadier Slater and of the Army that he be removed from his appointment.

After a full investigation by the special investigation branch of the Royal Military Police and by Brigadier Slater's commanding officer and after taking legal advice, it was decided that it was more appropriate to deal with the matter administratively.
