HC Deb 10 May 1988 vol 133 cc98-9W
Mr. Janner

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many men and how many women, respectively, who are of Afro-Caribbean and of Asian origin, respectively, are employed at senior levels in his Department.

Mr. Lee

In common with the rest of the Civil Service, the Department of Employment group has carried out surveys of the ethnic origin of its staff. The surveys were undertaken on the basis of voluntary self-classification. Results for 1 April 1988 show that of a total of 3,654 staff at senior executive officer level and above, 3,246 (or 89 per cent.) responded. The table shows the number of those responding who classified themselves as Afro-Caribbean or Asian.
