HC Deb 10 May 1988 vol 133 c57W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many inquiries have been received at British embassies and high commissions in(a) South Africa, (b) Zimbabwe, (c) Canada, (d) Australia and (e) New Zealand for settlement in the United Kingdom by descendants of United Kingdom-born grandparents for each year since 1982 and each month to date in 1988;

(2) from which countries, and in which years, people have entered the United Kingdom in each year since 1971 for settlement on the grounds of United Kingdom ancestry.

Mr. Renton

The information available centrally relates to the numbers of persons accepted for settlement on the grounds of being a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent born in the United Kingdom. Provisional figures for 1987 are given in the table. Equivalent figures for earlier years can be found in the annual Command Paper "Control of Immigration: Statistics, United Kingdom" (tables 3 and 4A of the issue for 1986—Cm. 166). South Africa is not a member of the Commonwealth and therefore citizens of that country cannot obtain settlement in this way.

Numbers of Commonwealth citizens with a UK-born grandparent accepted for settlement in the United Kingdom—1987

Australia 1,740 250
Canada 420 80
New Zealand 1,700 360
