HC Deb 10 May 1988 vol 133 c61W
Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what are his Department's target reductions in energy usage for 1988–89; what is his Department's target reduction in electricity usage for lighting in 1988–89; and what investment his Department is planning to make in new energy efficient lighting equipment in 1988–89 to achieve those target reductions.

Mr. Chope

My Department's target reductions in energy usage for 1988–89 are:

Per cent.
DOE (C) 5

Central DOE has reduced energy costs by about 18 per cent. over the past two years. In the case of PSA energy costs have been reduced by almost 13 per cent. over the same period.

Because of the wide range of operational requirements and types of buildings, it is not feasible to set specific targets for particular forms of energy consumption and investment in energy-efficient lighting equipment forms only part of the steps to be taken to reduce usage.
