HC Deb 09 May 1988 vol 133 c36W
Rev. Martin Smyth

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether private nursing homes and residential homes for the elderly were required to provide occupational therapy as well as nursing care before being recognised; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

A person registered under the Registered Homes Act 1984 in respect of a nursing home is required to make suitable arrangements for the daily activity of residents, according to their needs and capacities and occupational therapy services may be available from the local social services authority or the health authority.

A person registered under the Act in respect of a residential care home also has to make such arrangements. Any nursing care required in residential care homes should be provided by the local community nursing service or under their supervision.
