HC Deb 05 May 1988 vol 132 cc540-1W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what steps are being taken to extend the provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Bill[Lords] to (a) the Channel Islands and (b) the Isle of Man: and what other measures are being taken to ensure that the intended purposes of this legislation are not avoided by persons or businesses in the United Kingdom, based in those island territories.

Mr. Butcher

Part I of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Bill contains provision under which it may be extended to the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man by Order in Council. In accordance with normal practice it will be for the islands themselves to decide if and to what extent it should be so extended. The Isle of Man is understood to be considering introducing new legislation of its own on copyright, in parallel with the United Kingdom Bill, and in this event extension of the provisions of the Bill is unlikely to be appropriate.
