HC Deb 04 May 1988 vol 132 c445W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science on how many occasions of which he is aware a school governing body or sub-committee of a school governing body has brought and heard charges of gross misconduct against a teacher employed at the school in respect of that teacher's actions as a governor of the school and not related to the teacher-governor's employment at the school; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

We are not aware of any such occasions. The meetings and proceedings of school governing bodies are governed by regulations made by my right hon. Friend. Under the current regulations a teacher or other governor is disqualified from continuing to hold that office in certain specified circumstances. However, the regulations make no provision for a governing body to hold a disciplinary hearing in relation to the actions of one of its members in that person's capacity as a governor.
