HC Deb 31 March 1988 vol 130 c685W
Mr. Tony Banks

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the amounts paid in out-of-court settlements of claims arising from the wrongful acts of Metropolitan police officers in 1987; and what were the amounts paid under awards made by courts in 1987 and the number of cases concluded in 1987.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that in 1987 the total amount paid by the Metropolitan police in settlements out of court arising from allegations of wrongful acts by Metropolitan police officers (whether or not formal proceedings were instituted) was £173,714. A total of £11,233 was paid under awards made by the courts. In all, 133 cases were concluded.
