HC Deb 31 March 1988 vol 130 c623W
Sir Dudley Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what part British forces played in the recent NATO Exercise Arrowhead Express in northern Norway; and if he will make a statement on the result of that exercise.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The United Kingdom element of the Allied Command Europe Mobile Force (AMF), including an infantry battalion, a logistic support battalion, a force artillery HQ, force reconnaissance unit, helicopter support and RAF Jaguars, played a full role in deployment, deterrent and combat operations conducted in Exercise Arrowhead Express. The exercise tested the AMF in its role as an immediate reaction force deployed to a threatened flank area of ACE to deter aggression, to demonstrate NATO solidarity and resolve and to operate alongside host nation forces.

Detailed assessment and evaluation of the exercise is currently being undertaken by participating nations and the appropriate NATO authorities.

From a United Kingdom viewpoint early indications are that the exercise was very successful.
