To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many placements of people who have been transferred from long-stay mental handicap hospitals into community-based settings have proved unsuccessful due to(a) lack of funding, (b) poor service design and (c) neighbourhood hostility.

This information is not available centrally. However, the Department is not aware of any significant number of unsuccessful transfers of residents from mental handicap hospitals to community-based settings, although there may be initial difficulties for a number of reasons in such placements.
