HC Deb 24 March 1988 vol 130 cc202-3W
Mr. McAllion

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of spending in Tayside on(a) primary education, (b) secondary education, (c) further education and (d) nursery education was met by Government grant and what proportion was met by the regional council in each year since 1979; and what were the respective cash figures for each category at 1987–88 prices.

Mr. Lang

It is not possible to provide a breakdown as requested. Government grant in respect of local authority relevant expenditure, aggregate Exchequer grant, is composed of specific grants and the rate support grant. There are no specific grants available to finance any one of the broad categories of expenditure specified. RSG, by far the largest element of AEG, is paid in support of local authorities' revenue generally and is not hypothecated to individual services. It is not therefore possible to express RSG as a proportion of expenditure on particular services.
