HC Deb 22 March 1988 vol 130 c91W
Sir Trevor Skeet

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the duty on petrol will require to be harmonised by 1992.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 21 March 1988]: The Commission has proposed harmonisation of the excise duty on petrol by 1992. The proposal would cause difficulties for a number of member states, including the United Kingdom, and has important implications for a wide range of Community and national policies including transport, energy and environment. As decisions on the proposals require unanimity, the United Kingdom's position is fully safeguarded.
