§ Mr. Leighton
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many housing starts were made in each of the last 10 years in(a) the public sector, (b) the private sector, and (c) the housing association sector.

§ Mrs. Roe
In 1987, it is provisionally estimated that there were 197,300 dwellings started in England for the private sector and 24,600 for the public sector including 9,500 for housing associations. Figures for the earlier years appear in table 6.1(a) of "Housing and Construction Statistics 1976–1986" which is available in the Library.
