HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c638W
Mr. Nicholas Bennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total expenditure in cash terms and at constant 1988 prices of the Welsh Development Agency on the tourism industry in each year since the establishment of the Welsh Development Agency; and what percentage these figures represent of the total expenditure of the Welsh Development Agency in each of these years.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Welsh Development Agency's contribution to the development of the tourism industry is mainly indirect through key programmes such as land reclamation, environmental improvement and investment.

Since the agency's inception, tourism-related projects costing in the order of £20 million have been completed or are in progress. This is equivalent to about 3 per cent. of total mainstream Welsh Development Agency spending over the same period. A broad estimate of tourism-related expenditure at 1988 prices is £32 million or 3.5 per cent. of total spending since 1976. Comparable information is not available for individual financial years.
