HC Deb 17 March 1988 vol 129 c683W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland why it is necessary for the holder of a valid Great Britain driving licence to replace it with a Northern Ireland driving licence before it expires.

Mr. Needham

When the holder of a driving licence issued either in Great Britain or Northern Ireland permanently changes address, the law requires that change to be notified to the relevant licensing authority to have the change recorded and a new licence issued. Holders of a licence issued in Great Britain who take up permanent residence in Northern Ireland must have their new address recorded on a licence issued by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland, which is responsible for the issue of Northern Ireland driving licences.
