To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many fatalities of self-employed persons and illegally employed persons took place whilst carrying out work covered by the construction regulations of the Factories Act in the years 1985, 1986 and 1987.

The table gives the available information for reported fatalities of those self-employed persons in the construction industry from 1985 to March 1987. Accidents to illegally employed persons cannot be distinguished in the records.

In addition, the Health and Safety Executive knows of other fatal accidents to self-employed persons engaged in construction work outside the construction industry. For 1985 the number was 1; for 1986–87 it was also 1.
