§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 10 March 1988]: Table 1 shows the number of people unemployed for six months or more in travel-to-work areas in Tayside in January of each year since 1979.
Table 2 shows the number of people unemployed for six months or more in jobcentre areas in Tayside in January each year from 1979 to 1985. Figures by jobcentre areas are not available after 1985.
589WDue to the various changes which have taken place in the compilation of the statistics during the period, the figures are not directly comparable.
It is not possible to determine how many unemployed claimants left the count as a direct result of the restart programme, which began in Dundee in January 1986 and was extended nationally in July 1986.
§ Mr. McAllionTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give for the Manpower Services Commission area manpower board covering Dundee, the most recent monthly statistics for new JTS showing (i) the number of trainees in the latest available period who entered work placements, (ii) the cumulative total of how many are in work places at the latest available date, (iii) trainees who left the scheme in the latest available period, and (iv) the number of cumulative leavers since the scheme started.

§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 10 March 1988]: This information is not available. An independent follow-up survey to collect data on the destination of trainees leaving the new job training scheme has been commissioned and the results are expected to be available in the next few months.
There are currently 277 trainees on new JTS in the Grampian and Tayside area manpower board area.
