§ 42. Mr. ChapmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps are taken to ensure that road maintenance and repairs are undertaken with minimum inconvenience to drivers and passengers; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyWe aim to minimise inconvenience to road users by careful programming of works, improving traffic management arrangements and by getting works completed more quickly—particularly by greater use of lane rental contracts which are achieving an acceleration of 33 per cent. on average. Further measures are being considered. We hope to make an announcement on 1988–89 programme shortly.
